The short answer
Claude Code costs $20/month on Claude Pro — Anthropic's standard subscription — or you can access it via the Anthropic API with pay-per-token pricing and no monthly floor. The tool itself has no additional licence cost. You're paying for model access, not software.
For most individuals starting out, Claude Pro is the right entry point. For teams or heavy users who run multiple long sessions daily, the API quickly becomes more cost-effective.
Claude Pro — $20/month
Claude Pro gives you access to Claude Code with a usage allowance that resets on a rolling basis. In practice, this covers several hours of active coding per day for a single user working at a steady pace. Most people doing one focused project don't hit the limit in normal use.
What's included
- Access to Claude Code via the CLI and IDE extensions (VS Code, JetBrains)
- Anthropic's latest models including Claude Sonnet and Opus
- claude.ai web interface and mobile apps
- Projects and extended context features
- No per-token billing — flat monthly cost
When you hit the limit
Claude Pro pauses when you reach the usage cap. It does not charge you extra — it simply waits for the limit to reset, which typically takes a few hours. If you're deep in a build and can't afford downtime, the API eliminates this constraint entirely.
Anthropic API — Pay per token
The Anthropic API has no monthly subscription fee. You pay per million tokens of input and output, with pricing depending on which model you use. There is no usage cap — you pay for exactly what you consume, nothing more.
| Model | Input (per 1M tokens) | Output (per 1M tokens) |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Sonnet 4.6 | $3 | $15 |
| Claude Opus 4.7 | $15 | $75 |
| Claude Haiku 4.5 | $0.80 | $4 |
Most Claude Code sessions use Sonnet by default. A typical coding task consuming 100K tokens costs roughly $0.30–$1.50 depending on the depth of the task and the model used. A full day of intensive work might cost $5–$20 via the API — comparable to or less than the Pro monthly fee depending on your intensity.
Pro vs API: which is right for you?
| Situation | Best option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner building a first project | Claude Pro | Simple, predictable cost — no usage anxiety |
| Individual doing 2–4 hours/day of coding | Claude Pro | Flat $20 likely cheaper than API equivalent |
| Heavy user hitting Pro limits regularly | API | Unlimited sessions, pay for exactly what you use |
| Small team (3–10 people) | API | Centralised billing, no per-seat Pro subscriptions |
| Evaluating before committing | Claude Pro | Lower entry cost, cancel any time |
Team pricing
Anthropic offers a Claude for Teams plan at $30/person/month with higher rate limits and admin billing controls. For larger organisations, the API with centralised billing is typically more cost-efficient than per-seat subscriptions.
For a team of five developers using Claude Code actively, budget $150–$500/month via the API. The range is wide because cost scales directly with how aggressively the team uses it — some teams run Claude Code for every feature; others use it for specific high-complexity tasks.
Is Claude Code worth the cost?
At $20/month for an individual, the question is really whether Claude Code accelerates your work enough to justify the subscription. For experienced developers, the answer is almost always yes — Claude Code routinely handles tasks that would otherwise take hours. For non-technical founders, the ROI calculation is different: Claude Code replaces what would otherwise require hiring a developer, making it cost-effective at 10× the price.
The realistic comparison is not "Claude Code vs free" — it's "Claude Code vs the cost of the developer time it replaces." By that measure, $20/month is very easy to justify.
Claude Code at Claude Camp
At Claude Camp, participants bring their own Claude Pro subscription or API key. During a week of intensive building, most participants spend $20–$40 on model costs — roughly one to two months of Claude Pro, or a comparable API bill. That includes building and shipping a complete working product from scratch.
The cost of Claude Camp covers accommodation on an organic farm in Pai, all meals, structured instruction, and a cohort of other builders. Model access is separate — and cheap compared to what you produce with it.
